Year 2000 Plans
Motor Fleet Management

Alternative Fuels

Motor Fleet Management has propane dispensers at its Blue Ridge Road facility and Motor Pool downtown. Plans are underway to have an E-85 (Ethanol) dispensing pump installed at the 1915 Blue Ridge Road site by the summer of 2000. Ethanol is already available at the Motor Pool 24 hours a day.

An agreement has been reached with the Department of Transportation to assist with this project. Since all new vehicles are received at Blue Ridge Road, this project will allow all new E-85 powered vehicles to be filled with E-85 fuel. It will also be a convenient site for other E-85 powered vehicles to obtain fuel.

Project Advantages

  • Reduce dependence on foreign oil
  • Reduce air pollution
  • Capability of being grown and produced in North Carolina

Right Size Vehicle Assignments

Motor Fleet Management is reviewing permanently assigned vehicles as they are being replaced. In an effort to save fuel and purchase costs, less costly and more fuel-efficient vehicles are being purchased as replacement vehicles. So far, 94 assignments have been identified that will not be adversely affected by downsizing. $240,000 in purchase costs can be saved and 81,278 gallons of fuel will be saved over the life of these vehicles.

Recycled Antifreeze

Motor Fleet Management has located a vendor that will recycle antifreeze on-site for the approximately 2,000 vehicles located in the Raleigh area. The vehicle servicing generates approximately 100 gallons of used antifreeze annually. The vendor filters the antifreeze, adjusts its acidity, and sets the freeze protection properties to standard. The recycled antifreeze is pumped back into a 55-gallon drum and is ready for reuse.
