Vehicle Rebuild/Refurbish

Motor Fleet Management (MFM) is rebuilding 1993 through 1996 Chevrolet Caprices in lieu of buying new full-sized vehicles. A comparable new vehicle has a purchase price of $20,909, whereas the average cost of rebuilding a vehicle costs $10,266. If all 850 fleet Caprices can be rebuilt, MFM has the potential to save over $8 million in purchase costs.

 Pilot Project

  • 60 Vehicles Rebuilt
  • Average Cost $12,845
  • Purchase Costs Saved $474,860

Ongoing Contracted Project

  • 254 Vehicles Rebuilt
  • Average Cost $10,266
  • Purchase Costs Saved $2,703,322

Total Purchase Costs Saved to Date: $3.18 million

Alternative Fuel Vehicles

Motor Fleet Management is purchasing alternative fueled vehicles to reduce dependence on foreign oil and to reduce air pollution. Nearly 1,000 vehicles will be purchased before the end of the fiscal year that will run on Ethanol fuel (E-85) or gasoline. Motor Fleet Management has installed an Ethanol pump at the Peace Street Motor Fleet and the Department of Transportation has installed an Ethanol pump at its Beryl Drive location.

  • 890 E-85 powered vehicles
  • Five compressed natural gas vehicles
  • Three electric vehicles
  • Six propane vehicles

Advantage: 50,000 gallons of E-85 used instead of gasoline
