Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical
POLLUTION PREVENTION

Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical (OMP) is a division of Johnson & Johnson, producing a line of pharmaceutical products to treat cystic fibrosis. OMP also manages and administers services and engineering and maintenance support to other divisions of the Johnson & Johnson family.

OMP's waste minimization program focused on both the research and development and manufacturing operations to reduce volume and toxicity of all wastes generated. An innovative waste stream assessment database and prioritization process, which inventoried and characterized waste stream information, was developed. Waste was minimized, recycled or resold to other industries, based on environmental and health hazards.

Significant environmental accomplishments at OMP include:

  • Incorporating waste minimization in project designs.
  • Reducing solvent use in chromatographs and spectrometers by 50 percent.
  • Reducing the use of isopropyl alcohol by 82 percent through a process modification for cleaning of manufacturing tank and mixers.
  • Reselling waste solvent as a raw material substitute to other industrial users.
  • Reselling overspray from the coating process to a leather tanning company as a raw material.
  • Reducing the burden on public water and sewage systems by using water saver control devices.
  • Recycling solvents.
  • Improving sterilization techniques for waste handling and reuse of containers.
