McNeil Consumer Products Company
POLLUTION PREVENTION
Johnson & Johnson's McNeil Consumer Products Company, a manufacturer
of pharmaceuticals, including the complete line of TYLENOL® and
MOTRIN® products, owns and operates an 800,000 square foot facility
located on 113 acres in Fort Washington, Montgomery County, with
1,500 employees.
In 1992, the company established a pollution prevention program
to meet specific pollution prevention goals. McNeil replaced a trichloroethane
solvent with a water based cleaner. The company installed energy
efficient lighting and HVAC, and used Energy Star standards in its
buildings. This program also included recycling plastic, aluminum,
glass, fiber drums and office paper, composting landscaping waste,
reducing the amount of packaging used, and reusing water where possible.
McNeil also patented GELKOTE, a process for coating products with
gelatin that reduces waste and creates a byproduct that can be used
as livestock feed. The company is currently attempting to receive
ISO 14000 certification.
The improvements made by McNeil resulted in a reduction of 7.3
million gallons of water and waste water used, 1,018 tons of solid
waste either recycled or avoided and 769 million BTU of energy saved.
Annually, the company saves $2.6 million, including more than $92,000
in water and wastewater costs and more than $112,000 from reducing
and recycling waste streams.
