Concurrent Technologies Corporation
TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE PROVIDER
Concurrent Technologies Corporation (CTC), a non-profit, national
resource for academia, government and industry, provides research,
development, deployment, training and education services in computing
and communications, environment and energy, manufacturing and materials
and systems and software.
CTC operates the National Defense Center for Environmental Excellence
(NDCEE) for the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD), its primary environmental
effort. The NDCEE was established as a national resource for the
development, application and dissemination of advanced environmental
technologies. This program directly supports the Deputy Undersecretary
of Defense for Environmental Security, the office responsible for
DOD's compliance with environmental law.
NDCEE's projects focus on the demonstration of full-scale equipment
using client parts in a simulated factory environment. The NDCEE
approach includes technology justification, where technical performance,
cost and environmental risk is analyzed. Seventeen specific instances
of technology transition have been documented, including: powder
coating, electrocoating, aqueous cleaning, National Emission Standards
for Hazardous Air Pollutants compliant vapor degreasing, electrodialysis,
caustic-based stripping, Nitrogen Removal process, microfiltration,
facility environmental monitoring and management system and ultrahigh
pressure waterjet. The result has been a reduction of 300,000 pounds
of discharges of various pollutants per year. For example, aqueous
cleaning solutions have replaced chemicals containing volatile organic
compounds in cleaning parts and removing coatings.
The NDCEE program is structured around technology transition emphasizing
recycling, recovery and reuse of chemical compounds, environmental
management and projects and activities to reduce the use of traditional
energy sources and associated emissions.
