he Massachusetts Manufacturing partnership (MMP) works with small and medium-size manufacturers in Massachusetts to increase their local competitiveness. MMP achieves this goal by developing and successfully completing projects that increase quality, streamline processes, strengthen employee performance, and enhance products thereby enabling companies to work better, faster, cheaper, and cleaner.

For many years, manufacturing in Massachusetts has been subject to tremendous pressure from structural, political, and industrial changes. The Commonwealth's manufacturing sector has been shedding employment since 1984, and since 1988, has lost over 131,000 jobs.

Manufacturing jobs also account for approximately 20% of the employment in the Commonwealth and manufacturing output comprises approximately 22% of the gross state product.

Additionally, the Massachusetts manufacturing sector is comprised of primarily small manufacturers:

61% of all establishments employ under 10 people;
78% of all establishments employ under 25 people; and
87% of all establishments employ under 50 people.
