Narrative:
PHASE 1 - Historically all blast media has been disposed of as a hazardous waste at NAVAVNCLASS: DEPOT JAX. Based upon knowledge of the process, there was reasonable cause to suspect that the blasting operation involving this particular media would not yield a hazardous waste. Several 55 gallon drums of spent blast media were tested. Concentrations of the EP toxic metals fell well below the limits in every drum. As a result of the testing, this spent media was reclassified as an industrial waste. The production shop has been warned to keep this media segregated from all other spent media. The spent media will be periodically tested to insure that it has remained non-hazardous. PHASE 2 - A brief study of the spent Metcolite C showed that approximately 50% of the media was still within the grit size requirements of the specification. It is therefore possible that this media may be recyclable. Before a reclassification process can be set up, however, it will be necessary to run physical tests on panels blasted with this media. This blast media is used to prepare metal surfaces for plasma spray coatings. The applications are critical and media contaminated with fines, grease, or dirt could cause catatrosphic adhesion failures. If it is determined that this material can be recycled equipment to classify the media will be purchased. It has also been proposed that the fines from this operation may fall in the range of 220 grit aluminum oxide which is used in other blasting operations at this facility.
