Plastic Media Blasting (Aircraft Airframes)

DEPOT MAINTENANCE PROJECT as of 940923

Type: E
Accession Number: 9025
Code: Active

Narrative:

To meet increasingly tight wastewater discharge standards, aircraft will be stripped using Plastic Media Blasting (PMB) in lieu of chemical stripping (when approved by NAVAIR). Wastewater generated by chemical stripping requires treatment before discharge. Waste products generated by PMB contain chromium, cadmium and blasting grit. PMB process discharge does not require treatment, hence, the disposal cost is significantly lower than that of the chemical stripping process.
