Classes/workshops
- Arboretum workshops
State Arboretum of Virginia
Classes and workshops are offered spring and fall. Some classes are appropriate for children. Contact SAV for list of classes and ordering information.
Curriculum materials
- Commonwealth of Virginia: School Gardening for Wildlife
Virginia Museum of Natural History
This curriculum package and workshop is intended to help schools create a wildlife garden on school grounds and use it for interdisciplinary learning. Contact VMNH for purchasing information.
- Project Learning Tree
Virginia Department of Forestry
A K-12 curriculum supplement about forest communities and ecosystems. Activities are correlated to the new Standards of Learning. Guides available through six-hour workshops. Call VDOF or your local forestry office for workshop dates or to set up a teacher training workshop.
Events
- Annual tree seedling sale
Colonial Soil and Water Conservation District
Each spring, the Colonial SWCD sponsors the sale of a variety of species of plants and shrubs to be used for erosion control or wildlife habitat construction. Contact CSWCD for a price list and ordering information.
Field trips/site tours
- State Arboretum of Virginia Adult Tour Program
State Arboretum of Virginia
General and topical tours are available free of charge for groups; self-guided tours are also available. Call SAV; reservations are required.
- Arboretum School Tour Program
State Arboretum of Virginia
Nine different environmental topics are available to school groups. The programs are grade-level specific and include outdoor walks, hands-on activities and take-home items. Reservations are required; call early. Call SAV for a free brochure describing the programs.
Outreach programs/speakers
- The Problem of Invasive Exotic Plants
Virginia Native Plant Society
A speaker (with slides) will discuss the problem of invasive exotic plants destroying the habitat of native plants. Call VNPS to schedule; travel expenses must be reimbursed.
Publications
- Spring Wildflowers of the Blue Ridge Mountains: A Checklist
Blue Ridge Wildflower Society
This 14-page checklist gives common and scientific names of about 400 spring and early summer blooming trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants. Available from BRWS for $1.50.
- Plants: Improving Our Environment
John Marshall Soil and Water Conservation District
This 15-page educational comic book for upper elementary students incorporates principles of soil and water conservation. Available at no charge to Fauquier County residents; contact JMSWCD. Teachers may request a class set but must give at least one month advance notice.
- One Green Tree
John Marshall Soil and Water Conservation District
This 14-page educational comic book for elementary or middle school grades discusses all the benefits that trees provide to the environment and includes a conservation ethic for replanting to replace harvested trees. Available to Fauquier County residents. No charge; contact JMSWCD. Teachers may request a class set but must give at least one month advance notice.

- Forests Are More Than Trees
National Wildlife Federation
This 20-minute filmstrip for elementary and middle school students shows the importance of forests. The program covers ecology, uses, recreation, habitats and threats to forest welfare. Available from NWF for $5. Also available as a slide set.
Videos
- Forests for the Chesapeake Bay
John Marshall Soil and Water Conservation District
This 25-minute video is about the watersheds of the Chesapeake Bay, nonpoint source pollution and how forests help protect the Bay. It includes footage of a forester visiting a private landowner to discuss management of forested property. Available for loan to Fauquier County residents from JMSWCD; call or write to reserve.
