Classes/workshops

  • The Virginia Angler Program
    Department of Game and Inland Fisheries
    This eight- to 12-hour course/workshop is designed to train educators (primarily physical education) in how to teach basic angling and aquatic resource education in the classroom. Contact DGIF directly. A minimum of 15 participants is required. Courses are scheduled at various times and locations.

  • Virginia Boating Education Program
    Department of Game and Inland Fisheries
    Statewide, year-round classes promote safe and ethical boating practices on Virginia's waters. Call (800) 245-BOAT.

  • Teachers on the Bay
    Institute for Chesapeake Bay Studies
    This graduate marine ecology course for K-12 teachers features extensive field studies and hands-on learning. A curriculum design element allows teachers to adapt materials to their own classrooms. Contact ICBS.

  • Curriculum materials and sctivitites
    National Aquarium in Baltimore
    NAIB has published a wide range of materials, including the aquatic science curriculum "Living in Water." Contact NAIB for a complete listing and order form; cost varies ($2 to $12).

  • 4-H marine/aquatic projects
    Virginia Cooperative Extension Service
    A series of units on marine and aquatic topics with games and activities is available. Four units are available for grades three through six (water, ecology, oceans and resources) and three for grades seven through nine (water pollution, taxonomy and adaptations). Contact local extension office/4-H agent.

  • Marine science curriculum guides
    Virginia Marine Science Museum
    A set of guides for teaching about marine science-related topics is available for all grades and covers a variety of topics. Each guide costs $5; contact VMSM for complete list of titles and ordering information.


Events

  • Community Fishing Clinics Program
    Department of Game and Inland Fisheries
    This program is designed to provide consultation and materials to organizations interested in co-sponsoring fishing clinics in their communities. A free brochure is available from DGIF; the organizational kit is available from DGIF for $5 (send check payable to "Treasurer of Virginia").

  • Marine science programs
    Virginia Marine Science Museum
    A variety of programs is available for groups of all ages, both on-site at the museum and in the field. Contact VMSM for a current schedule of programs available; fees vary with program.

  • Catch of the Day - Wooden Boats and Iron Men
    Watermen's Museum
    This 1 1/2-hour program offers students and teachers an opportunity to gain an apppreciation for the life of the watermen. Contact WM for scheduling information.


Outreach programs/speakers

  • Ocean Encounters
    Ocean Encounters
    Programs in marine science are available to schools, daycare centers, camps, senior centers, libraries, museums, hospitals, home-schoolers and others. Concepts are taught using hands-on activities and live marine invertebrates. Call OE for contract; complete and return. Fees vary with program and distance traveled.

  • Educational publications
    Virginia Institute of Marine Science
    Several publications are available for teaching about the Chesapeake Bay and general marine science, including fact sheets, curriculum materials and scientific reports. Contact VIMS to request a publications list/order form.
