Grocery Manufacturers of America
The Grocery
Manufacturers of America (GMA) represents companies that make and market the world's
best-known brands of food and consumer packaged goods. GMA is the industry voice on public
policy and industry productivity issues, through strategic issues management involving
government relations, communications, legal, regulatory, scientific and education
advocacy. GMA member company sales, totaling $400 billion, represent 90% of all food and
consumer packaged goods sold in the U.S.
From a summary of the GMA report Progress and Performance: "GMA members
recognize the importance of issues relating to packaging and solid waste management
challenges. Grocery manufacturers continue to demonstrate dramatic progress toward greater
packaging waste reduction and recovery. Between 1980 and 1993, grocery packaging declined
as a percentage of total municipal waste generated, even with an increase in U.S.
population of 13.8 percent.
The GMA's Environmental Affairs Committee is charged with identifying and prioritizing
environmental issues of importance to GMA members, building a consensus among its members,
and making policy recommendations to GMA's president, Government Affairs Council and Board
of Directors. The Committee is also responsible for recommending industry programs to
address issues in a pro-active manner. In general, the Committee's activities are focused
on solid waste and product packaging issues but also include a number of other
environmental issues as identified on a timely basis by Committee members.
