BIFMA International
BIFMA International
is an association of office furniture manufacturers and their associates, addressing
issues of common concern. The association mission is to promote the growth of the Contract
Furniture industry by providing market-focused services including standards development,
industry statistics, education, government interaction and networking opportunities.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued the final rule for the wood furniture
manufacturing industry on November 21. It is expected to reduce emissions of air toxics,
such as formaldehyde, methanol and toluene, by 33,000 tons annually, a 60 percent
reduction from current levels. The regulation is the result of BIFMA International's
successful regulatory negotiation with other representatives from the furniture
manufacturing industry, the coatings industry, environmental groups, state and local air
pollution agencies, and the EPA. The wood furniture requirements are based on pollution
prevention options, instead of traditional "end-of-pipe" controls. The
regulation also provides flexibility to industry by offering a choice of four different
compliance options.
