Association of American Railroads
The Association of American
Railroads (AAR) is a trade association whose members account for 75 percent of the
line-haul mileage, 91 percent of the employees, 93 percent of the freight revenues and
most of the intercity passenger miles of all railroads in the United States. In addition
to Amtrak, the major railroads in Canada and Mexico are also AAR members. The Association
of American Railroads strives to make the rail industry more safe, efficient and
productive by conducting and coordinating research, development and other support
programs; facilitating the seamless exchange of electronic information among railroads,
their customers and suppliers; and advocating the interests of railroads in the public
policy arena.
AAR pollution prevention programs operate in several areas. They include initiatives to
evaluate the use of ultrafiltration to extend the life of railroad shop cleaning solutions
and to develop a railroad specification for a standard locomotive fuel coupling and
automatic shutoff device. AAR is also evaluating the effectiveness of locomotive fuel tank
damage resistance specification changes and facilitating information exchange by
sponsoring a railroad industry pollution prevention environmental management conference.
