American Society of Civil Engineers
The American Society of
Civil Engineers' (ASCE) mission is to advance professional knowledge and improve the
practice of civil engineering. The Society's major goals are to develop engineers who will
promote technology and apply it to further the objectives of society as a whole, to
promote the dedication and technical capability of its members, and to advance the
professional and economic stature of civil engineers.
ASCE's policy on Source Reduction of Solid Waste states "that prevention of
selected materials from entering the waste stream is recognized as an important issue and
that reduction of waste at the source is a preferred method of waste management". The
Society encourages package modification, manufacturing process changes, disposal fees, and
longer product life span. Other environmental policies include those on recycling, costs
of improvements to the environment, multimedia pollution management, and hazardous waste
reduction.
