American Chemical Society
The American
Chemical Society (ACS) is a nonprofit educational and scientific organization,
chartered by Congress, with over 152,000 individual chemical scientists and engineers as
members.
The Society serves its members in industry, academia, and government by encouraging the
advancement of the chemical sciences and technologies while helping to solve the problems
of an increasing technological society. Its major activity is gathering and distributing
scientific information. In its Federal Policy Agenda, ACS states that "pollution
minimization and /or prevention are areas that offer the best hope for making significant
improvements in the environment. Supporting research, communicating advantages, and
eliminating economical and technical impediments are critical elements in making
advancements in this area." The Society advocates the implementation of pollution
prevention (P2) policies.
ACS has a Committee on Environmental Improvement (CEI) comprised of 27 committee
members, associates, and consultants. CEI is further divided into several subcommittees,
two of which address P2 issues-- the P2 Subcommittee and the Task Force on Laboratory
Waste Management. CEI comments on environmental legislation as well as regulations
proposed by the Environmental Protection Agency and other agencies. Two divisions within
ACS support P2 programming: 1) the Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Division's
Practical P2 Subdivision, and 2) the Environmental Chemistry Division. In addition, ACS
serves as secretary of the Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Awards Program.
ACS has an extensive publication catalog containing many works related to pollution
prevention, including Less Is Better: Laboratory Chemical Management for Waste Reduction.
