The Aluminum Association
The Aluminum
Association, founded in 1933, is the trade association for the aluminum industry in
the United States. Its members are producers of primary and secondary aluminum, aluminum
alloys, semi-fabricated wrought and cast aluminum and related products.
The Aluminum Association informs users and specifers about the advantages of aluminum;
disseminates technical information on the properties, characteristics, fabrication
techniques and applications of aluminum and its alloys; and promotes the recovery and
recycling of aluminum products.
The Aluminum Association also publishes statistics on the aluminum industry; its
products and its markets; disseminates information on safety, health and environmental
protection in the production and use of aluminum; maintains domestic and international
registries of designations applicable to aluminum alloys and tempers; and develops
aluminum product standards. In addition, The Aluminum Association addresses emerging
issues of public concern to the aluminum industry and represents the industry's views on
relevant legislative and regulatory matters to appropriate government bodies.
The environmental programs at The Aluminum Association focus on meeting the regulatory
requirements of the Clean Air Act of 1990, known as Maximum Achievable Control Technology
(MACT) standards development for primary and secondary operations. The association's
secondary MACT emission testing program was completed at all fourteen sites and the
results will be used to establish MACT emission limits for secondary aluminum production.
The EPA launched the Voluntary Aluminum Industrial Partnership (VAIP) in 1995, recognizing
members of the aluminum industry that made commitments to reduce PFC gas emissions. The
Aluminum Association will continue to work with the agency to further study these gases
and ways to measure them.
In addition, the industry has teamed with the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of
Industrial Technologies through The Aluminum Association to address issues of
competitiveness, the environment, and energy use from a long-term perspective. The
industry has developed a document titled "Aluminum Industry Technology Roadmap"
that outlines the overall technology strategy for achieving industry goals in these areas
and establishes a focused research and development agenda for aluminum. Some of these
performance targets are to recycle and treat all types of aluminum wastes, to achieve an
80% automobile recycling rate by 2004, and to reduce the overall energy intensity of
aluminum production.
The Aluminum Association produces several environmental publications, including the
Proceedings of the First "Pollution Prevention in the Aluminum Industry"
Workshop, 1995 and numerous documents about aluminum recycling.
