The process of cleaning, new cleaning equipment and cleaners has steadily progressed since this report was last updated. At the same time, information on alternatives and the process of change have become more accessible through multiple sources. This update will identify where information can be accessed with alternatives to meet most cleaning needs.
As always, the first-step in choosing alternative cleaners, chemistries, processes, equipment, etc., is to define your need. What soils have to be removed to what level, i.e.; define cleanliness to yourself. What part size surface, and geometry are involved? EPA funded a tool to walk you through this process titled The Solvent Alternative Guide (SAGE). This computer-based tool can be found at http://clean.rti.org/ and is kept current with changing technologies.
